In 2020, the Swedish-Jewish comedian Aron Flam published a controversial book called Det är en svensk tiger (This is a Swedish Tiger), a satirical reference to the country’s World War II slogan «en svensk tiger». Meaning both «a Swedish tiger» and «a Swede stays quiet», the slogan and its accompanying blue-and-yellow stylized tiger had reminded Swedes not only to be strong like a tiger, but to keep secrets and stay out of a war that was thought to have nothing to do with Sweden. After the war, however, it became clear that the Swedish government had been far from neutral.
Flam’s book reveals the extent of Sweden’s collaboration with the Nazis. For the cover, he chose a similar-looking tiger giving a Nazi salute and wearing a swastika armband. After becoming aware of the book, the Swedish government stopped a second print run and took legal action against Flam, on the spurious grounds that the image was protected by copyright. The defence lawyers argued that the image was satirical and Flam was found not guilty. Not only did the trial publicize Flam’s book, but it also drew attention to Sweden’s role in World War II.
